Establishment

The Standards Council of the Teaching Profession was established under the provisions of Part 2, Section 10 of the Education Acts (Teachers) Act 1993 (No. 44/1993) to replace the Teachers Registration Board (VA 4087).

Membership and Functions

Membership of the Council consisted of a full time chairperson and no more than eight other part-time members appointed by the Governor-in-Council on the recommendation of the Minister. Members were appointed for a term not exceeding three years, although they are eligible for re-appointment.

The function of the Council was to advise the Minister or Director on all matters relating to professional standards for the employment of members of the teaching service.

- minimum standards of academic qualifications and teacher training for entry into the teaching service

- qualifications for members of the teaching service

- criteria for the initial appointment and probation of teachers

- criteria for the promotion or advancement through a class or grade of office of members of the teaching service

- professional development needs of members of the teaching service; and

- evaluation of teacher education courses.

The Standards Council of the Teaching Profession was abolished by 2001 and replaced by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VA 5160).
