In a few cases, the spirit material represents the primary material of the gathering. Much of the spirit collection is focused on research active groups such as Cyperaceae, Phyllanthaceae and Cucurbitaceae. Work is currently underway to update the N.C.W. Beadle Herbarium spirit collection database. However, it is estimated that this collection includes approximately 1,400 plant specimens, of which nearly all were collected in Australia. Amongst the collection are specimens from all Australian states and territories, as well as a small number of specimens from Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, and the United Kingdom. The collection includes approximately 800 distinct species, and approximately 400 distinct genera. The specimen sheet collection of the N.C.W.
