Professor Bruhl's main research interests are in the biology, ecology and systematics of Cyperaceae. He is part of the international network of researchers working on the Cyperaceae.
He has also been involved in studies on a wide range of Australian plant groups (including ferns, wattles, Asteraceae, Apiaceae, Rutaceae, Lamiaceae, Myrtaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Phyllanthaceae, Juncaceae, etc.).
