This dataset contains the Underway (UWY) data collected on Southern Surveyor voyage SS 01/2003. This voyage took place in Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean in the eastern Lord Howe Rise, New Caledonia Basin, Norfolk and Three Kings Ridge Region during February and March 2003, under the leadership of Prof Tony Crawford (CSIRO). This dataset has been processed and is archived within the CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research Data Centre in Hobart. Additional information regarding this dataset is contained in the voyage plan and voyage summary. The standard Underway (=continuously recorded) dataset from a research voyage includes Navigation (NAV), Sounder (PDR), Thermosalinograph (TSG) and Meteorological (MET) data. Statement: Data source: original field data PDR: The transducer on the Southern surveyor is not the same one as was on the Franklin. Data quality was notably poorer especially in rougher weather and at depth.
NAV: The Ashtech OEM gps receiver is far inferior than the GPS which was previously on the Franklin. Overheating was thought to have caused many data "dropouts". There were also many spurious values observed in the data.
Data processing and quality control: as per current CMR Datacentre standards.
