Rooty - A root ideotype toolbox to support improved wheat yields

Research Project

Full description This project formed part of a larger effort under the International Wheat Yield Partnership (IWYP) with researchers in the UK, Germany, Italy and Mexico that seeks to improve wheat root systems and boost yield potential. The GRDC-supported activities in Australia aimed to rapidly develop elite bread wheat lines with a spectrum of root system configurations. The materials were developed under speed breeding conditions at The University of Queensland and the resulting BC2F4:F5 lines were profiled using whole-genome DArT-seq markers. Field-based phenotyping of the intro-selection lines revealed significant differences in root distribution. The intro-selection lines provide useful resources for researchers and breeders to further study the value of root traits that support wheat yield in a range of production scenarios.
