Full description

The volumes in this series consist of the listings, originally created and maintained by the Rolling Stock Branch, of the rolling stock owned and operated by the Victorian Railways and its successor agencies. The series was originally created in 1948 with the introduction of the GY class of rolling stock and was used concurrently with the volumes in VPRS 12845 Rolling Stock Register I until 1959. As from 1959, listings of stock still in service and which Victorian Railways wished to retain were transcribed onto the loose-leaf sheets in VPRS 12846 Rolling Stock Register II and are identified there at the top of the sheets with the volume and folio (or page) numbers from these volumes.

Entries were made for each class and type of rolling stock. Details given are the class designation, the number, the date upon which the stock was put into service, where it was built and the builder's name, details of the tare, the load, the axles, the diameter of the wheels, boxes, draw-gear and a column was allocated for remarks. For each of the units of rolling stock information is given regarding the disposal of the unit at the end of its useful working life - whether it was condemned, broken up or retained as part of an historical collection at the Newport Workshops or at some other location. The secretary to the Railways was notified of these disposals and reference may be found to them in the series relating to the registration of the Secretary's correspondence.

The final unit in this series lists the units or rolling stock in the historical collection and their location. The series appears to have ended when all such records were computerised.
