Research Project
Researchers: Dr Pam Watson (Principal investigator)
Full description
In 2004-5 a team of archaeology students from UNE under the supervision of Dr Pam Watson excavated the site of the Rocky River Post Office and Residence. The project was part of a training school at UNE, teaching Archaeological Field Methods. Rocky River had seen a gold rush in the 1850s that quickly produced a settlement of 5,000 people, larger at the time than Armidale. Mining activities declined after the first decade, but lingered on into the 20th Century. The only remnants now of this settlement are archaeological.
This project contributed to the New England Archaeology: Sites collection (Record No. S80, 2010) held by the Heritage Futures Research Centre, University of New England.
