Richard Haughton James was a commercial artist, industrial designer, advertising executive and painter. This archive is composed mainly of his personal papers. It includes personal correspondence from his family and friends, as well as his travel diaries. James was passionately committed to raising people's understanding of modern art, and he is credited with helping to develop a more enlightened attitude to modern art and industrial design in Australia.
