The registers record number, catalogue number, name, district, area, date of selection, correspondence, date deeds prepared and other relevant particulars. There are indexes in the front of each volume. By Act 31 Vic. No.5, An Act to regulate the Volunteer Force (9 October 1867), sections 44 and 45, every officer, non-commissioned officer and volunteer, not being on the paid staff or receiving regular pay, was entitled, after 5 years continuous efficient service from 1 January 1868, to a free grant of 50 acres of land. Service prior to 1868 was also considered in part.
