Research Project
Full description This project contains files associated with Joshua Wilson's PhD. The primary aim of this PhD was to reduce barriers to drone-based bird surveys. This was broken into three sub aims: manage drone induced disturbance, reduce costs associated with detecting birds in drone images, navigate logistical difficulties of drone-based bird surveys. To address these Joshua: conducted a review of drone-induced bird disturbance, characterised drone-induced shorebird disturbance in mixed-species flocks, developed a computer vision tool to detect birds in drone images and identify their species, and conducted a proof-of-concept drone survey of birds foraging in an intertidal habitat.
