BACKGROUND Quo Grab #02 examines everyday routines, mediated experience and the creation of contexts through juxtaposition. It has been established that smartphones are ideal devices to use for personal, reflective documentary filmmaking (Berkeley 2014), as well as for creative projects that reconnect the conception and execution stages of production (Batty 2014). Juxtaposition is a key method in creating new contexts for media clips (Kelly 2014). Gomez Cruz & Thornham (2015) call for a critical stance towards selfies, purporting a need to focus on the socio-technical practices constitute narratives. CONTRIBUTION These are ideas examined in the previous work in this series, however this film also explores ideas of mediated experience and the non-linearity of time in media work. In this film, the images on the left are assembled into a non-linear montage of video captured on a recent visit to Israel and Jordan; the images on the right are reused, reassembled, remixed videos used in Quo Grab #01 (2017); while the single, slow-motion video in the centre displays the filmmaker's unmonitored point of view when approaching the Treasury (Petra, Jordan), the famous spot where Annie Leibovitz photographed Susan Sontag in 1994. SIGNIFICANCE The practices surrounding mobile filmmaking and social media use prompt many questions to do with representation, meaning making and the connection between personal narratives and wider cultural experience. This film is significant partly due to the new meanings drawn through the juxtaposition of these multiple images placed beside one another, which include questions around time, place, memory and personal experience. The film also seeks to critique images of self-representation and their connection to cultural experiences. The film was double-blind peer reviewed and screened at MINA on 25 Oct 2017.Issued: 2017-01-01
