Professor Brandan Griffin completed his PhD (1980) in Geology at the University of Tasmania which involved extensive sub-antarctic fieldwork on Macquarie Island. Between 1980 and 1981 he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Chemie in Mainz, Germany. From 1981-1986 he was employed as the Electron Microprobe Analyst at the Electron Optical Centre at the the University of Adelaide. Since then, he is a Professorial Fellow in the Centre for Characterisation, Microscopy and Analysis (CMCA) and was past Director of the precursor Centre for Microscopy and Microanalysis (CMM) at the University of Western Australia. At the CMCA he has provided International Leadership in Scanning Microscopy and Microanalysis; supported high quality research that utilises scanning microscopy and microanalysis; and advised the University on new and emerging techniques in the areas of microscopy and microanalysis.

His key research areas include:

  • High resolution scanning electron and ion microscopy;
  • Variable pressure and environmental scanning electron microscopy;
  • X-ray microanalysis by electron microprobe and SEM;
  • Metrology and measurement by SEM;
  • materials characterisation by scanning electron microscopy;
  • mineral chemistry; and
  • forensic microscopies.

Memberships include:

  • Australian Microscopy and Microanalysis Society Inc.;
  • Australian Microbeam Analysis Society;
  • Microscopy Society of America;
  • Microbeam Analysis Society; and the
  • Geological Society of Australia.
