Analytical methods are given in the documentation. Before Sep 1997 all temperature data was measured by reversing thermometers calibrated here at CSIRO in Hobart. The NSW EPA started sampling the Port Hacking 100m and 50m stations in Sept 1997 and used a CTD from this date so a CTD temperature was also recorded. Reversing thermometers were used at all depths and that data was recorded in the CSIRO database unless the thermometers malfunctioned in which case CTD data was sometimes substituted. No details of when CTD data was substituted is recorded in the metadata but the comparison of data by Tim Ingleton from Sep 1998 to Feb 2002 shows close correlation between the two methods. CTD temperature for the depths sampled for both stations (100 and 50) were sent. In Feb 2004, the reversing thermometers were reduced to 2 depths at both sites. At the 100m station the depths measured by reversing thermometers were the surface and 75m and at the 50m station the depths were the surface and 40m. The data recorded in the database was then the 2 reversing thermometer temperatures and rest of the temperatures came from the CTD. Please note here that surface is actually 2-4metres below the actual surface of the water. On 29/8/2011 reversing thermometers were no longer used. This dataset contains oceanographic data collected at a 50m coastal station off Port Hacking, New South Wales (lat. 34 deg. 05 min. S, long. 151 deg. 13 min. E) from December 1942 (collection is ongoing). The station was set up under the CSIRO coastal monitoring programme in the 1940s and is sampled approximately monthly (weekly at some times) for temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, phosphate and nitrate.
