Pharmacokinetic data for twelve therapeutic equine medications

For each therapeutic substance, the published tables and figures indicate the time taken for the drug to reach its maximum concentration in the blood, its rate of metabolism and removal from the bloodstream, and its metabolites to be eliminated from the body via the urine. Data were collected by administering each medication to a group of twelve Standardbred and Thoroughbred horses housed at the Equine Centre, Charles Sturt University (Wagga Wagga, NSW). A second group of twelve Standardbred horses were housed at the Equine Centre, University of Queensland (Gatton, QLD). All blood and urine samples were analysed by official Australian horseracing forensic laboratories. Standard analytical methods and instrumentation were used (usually LC-MS or GC-MS), following sample extraction procedures. All methods were fully validated involving the use of calibration standards and quality control samples. All experimental procedure were conducted in accordance with the Australian Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes and were approved by the Animal Care and Ethics Committees of the University of Queensland and Charles Sturt University. The pharmacokinetic data were analysed using WinSAAM software and STATA Statistical Software 11.1., with Modelling work undertaken at the University of Pennsylvania. Data are relevant to veterinarians and veterinary researchers, horse owners and trainers, veterinary pharmaceutical companies, regulatory authorities in racing and other equine sports, and other sports drug testing agencies with the purposes of informing treatment protocols for sick or injured horses and assisting regulators in setting appropriate withholding times for equine medications in competition sports.
