Brief description

Freshwater Ecology - Research and Management InterestsMy natural resource management interests include environmental water management; species conservation; management advice for protecting aquatic values and mitigation; developing policy, management priorities and decision support for aquatic ecosystems; social envisioning and policy development around quantifiable ecological objectives; adaptive management under climate and land use change. My research interests include the conservation of freshwater ecosystems, long term variability in stream biotic assemblages, effects of forestry on stream ecology, impacts of exotic fish, restoration of native fish passage, the downstream influences of hydroelectric power stations and dams, environmental flows, the impact of mining on stream fauna, structure of aquatic food webs and the interactions between nutrient, sediment and light on stream processes.I was the Australian chair of the Independent Sustainable Rivers Audit Group (ISRAG), a group of four scientists auditing the ecological condition of the rivers of the Murray Darling Basin. I was the national coordinator for the National River Health Program (NRHP) for over 10 years, and have been instrumental in the development of national stream bioassessment systems and was the principal scientific advisor for the development of the Tasmanian framework for the Conservation of Freshwater-dependent Ecosystem Values (CFEV). I was project manager for the Tasmanian catchment project of the Landscape Logic CERF Hub (Centre for Environment, UTAS) and NERP program which finished in 2015.Currently I am:- Oceania Representative: Scientific and Technical Review Panel of the RAMSAR Convention on Wetlands, Gland Switzerland 2016 - 2018- Expert Reviewer, Horizon 2020 European Commission Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions - Research Fellowship Programme - Innovative Training Networks, Brussels, Belgium- Chief Science Advisor: Murray Darling Basin Authority, Canberra ACT- Science Advisory Panel: Environmental Water Knowledge & Research Program, Canberra ACT- Director and Chief Scientist: Freshwater Systems: aquatic consulting company- Adjunct Professor: University of Tasmania (Centre for Environment) and 'Scientist in Residence' at the University's Tasmanian College of the Arts (where I provide interdisciplinary support and facilitate art - science projects)
