Full description
BACKGROUND: Compared to dance performance, dance film provides composers not just the opportunity for a level of audiovisual precision but also a sophisticated potential for the juxtaposition of sonic space over visual space. This installation is a three screen iteration of a suite of filmed dance vignettes. SIGNIFICANCE: Funded by Australia council, Performing Lines, NSW Trade & Investment Arts CONTRIBUTION: As a three screen/one audio track installation - the challenge in this work was to make music and sound designs which could speak meaningfully to each scene on display; to make music open enough that it would fit the mood of all panels, whilst not falling back into a position of aural wallpaper. This was achieved by a combination of focussed compositions, and a bold approach to sound design - where the latter may bind completely to one screeen, whilst offering a surreal audiovisual juxtaposition in another. In exploring a range of these relationships, it became an interesting experience to see the ways in which sound could be used to direct the audience's gaze across the different scenes - which screens were 'enlivened' by sound, and which were rendered mute in sound's presence.Issued: 2013-01-01
