The Council Officer’s Reports were submitted to the General Council Meetings of the Municipality of Balmain. The reports were arranged chronologically. The General Council Meetings (see NRS 15810) were held at least monthly and also recorded chronologically.
The Municipal Engineer, Health Inspector, Building Inspector, and Town Clerk mainly prepared the typewritten reports in this volume. The reports document the variety of activities for which each Council Officer was responsible. The Engineer’s general report indicated progress on public works, and staffing issues. The Health Inspector’s general and special reports covered inspection of defective stoves, number of refreshment room licences granted, infectious cases reported, inspections of premises deemed unfit for human habitation, and other issues. The Building Inspector’s report concerned examination of plans and specifications of proposed buildings submitted for approval, assessment of applications for renewal of licences to maintain signs, and other matters. The Town Clerk’s report mainly covered staffing, legal and financial matters such as the financial statement for each month.
The date of the General Council Meeting that reports were submitted at, or the relevant folio in the minutes was recorded on each report. The signature of the Mayor and Town Clerk verified the above information.
Custody History
This series was in the custody of Mitchell Library until December 2001 when it was transferred to State Records NSW under section 29 of the State Records Act, 1998.
