Full description

Each file records details concerning the termination of a publican's license and of the compensation case that followed. A publican's license could be terminated in one of two ways: the first, the voluntary surrender of a license to the Licenses Reduction Board, and the second, the Board's decision to deprive a publican of his/her license. In the latter case the Board's policy was to deprive publicans of licenses where the number of hotels in any electorate exceeded the statutory number. The statutory number was proportionate to the number of electors in any electorate.

The files include correspondence between the Board and publican re the hotel's closure and compensation case. Some files include details of the hotel's history and construction as well as the current publican's purchase of liquor records.

The arrangement of the files is alphabetical by electorate and then by name of hotel. The dates indicated above are the dates of closure of hotels.
