Full description
This consists of papers relevant to the presentation of court proceedings before the Supreme Court, in Sydney and on circuit in Country Sessions. Until 1844 when circuit court hearings commenced, depositions were taken locally, and are arranged by place taken, but trials took place at Sydney.
The records show name of defendant, crime with which charged, defendant's plea, and sometimes date of trial. Records prior to 1837 consist primarily of depositions, comprising sworn statements of evidence. Later records often include additional papers such as indictments, informations, bail bonds, subpoenas, recognizance papers, correspondence, police reports, and exhibits.
An index to Papers and Depositions 1824-36 is available in the reading room.
