Full description
This series is the register of depositions received by the Clerk of the Peace from Clerks of Petty Sessions (acting as district Clerks of the Peace), regarding criminal actions to be instituted at country Quarter Sessions. Depositions relate to cases of a non-capital nature, and show in each case, registration number, name of defendant, place and date of committal, nature of alleged offence, date of receipt of deposition by the Clerk of Peace, date of return of deposition, name of officer to whom sent.
There is an alphabetical index in the front of each register. The registers are in chronological order. Within the series the following registration systems are used:
1849-1864 and 1865-1877 continuous single number (within volume), 1878-1879 continuous single number (covering 2 years), 1880-1882 continuous single number (covering 3 years) and from 1883 onwards annual single number.
From 28 October 1889 the volumes in the series are labelled 'County Deposition Register' or 'Country Deposition Book' and are sequentially numbered commencing from '1' in 1889. However, this titling and numbering would not appear to affect the continuity of the series.
