Full description
This series is alternatively known as 'Court Books' and is a register of those tried on criminal charges in Sydney Courts (mainly the Court of Quarter Sessions).
The first three calendars show: the gaol admission number of the prisoner, the date of the trial, the prisoner's name, age, ship on which he arrived in the colony, the committal details including the date and by whom, the date received into gaol, the offence, judge, verdict, date and remarks. The vessel of arrival was gradually omitted and the occupation of the prisoner was included. Subsequent volumes show: condition (such as ticket of leave, bond), when and where committed, type of jury (military or civil), charge, sentence, date of verdict, remarks (e.g. concerning alteration or commutation of sentences). Some volumes also contain memoranda and the name of the Commissioner, Attorney General and the Assistant Minister of Justice.
From 1856, the prisoner's "gaol" number is shown, and the "sentence" and "remarks" columns are fuller in detail, showing for example, recommendations by the jury and judge, details of discharge on bond and the name of the gaol to which the prisoner is assigned. From 1876, the occupation of the accused is shown.
The volumes occasionally include returns from the Principal Gaoler, Darlinghurst Gaol, requesting confirmation of sentences handed down by the Court.
The volumes are arranged in chronological order by date of trial. They do not contain an index.
