Letters received from government departments and individuals. This correspondence has been heavily culled by the Public Service Board and only three boxes remain of the general correspondence. In addition there remain the series of appeals against classification under the Civil
The original order of the remaining general correspondence has unfortunately been lost but it has been replaced in order of the registered number of the paper of each file.
The box of special papers contains the following files which represent mainly unregistered papers dealing with matters requiring the gathering and collating of information: Return of departments to request for information re travelling and other allowances, 1886; Blank cover memorandum from the Civil Service Board to the Principal Under-Secretary re appointments to the Mines Department, 1887 (not sent); Manuscript of Civil Service Board Report, 1889, and proof copy of appendices; Report of Civil Service Board, 1898, and related papers; Papers relating to the organisation of the Post Office, 1886-89; Manuscript and proofs of Civil Service Board Report, 1890; Papers re numbers of civil servants and amount of salary paid to them called for by a motion of the Legislative Assembly, 1891-92; and Copy of printed circular re formation of Public Service Association, 1892.
