This publication was known from the first edition in 1886 until 1904 as "The Wealth and Progress of New South Wales".

In this publication the statistics of the State are explained and analysed, and information is given about the legislative and administrative background. It gives a comprehensive survey of the social, demographic and economic structure and growth of New South Wales.

The bound edition is in a collective form with a general index. Some of the individual parts were first published and issued separately.

More detailed statistics can be obtained by referring to the "Statistical Register of New South Wales" and more recent statistics appear in the "Monthly Summary of Business Statistics" and the "Statistical Bulletin".

The "Official Year Book of New South Wales" has not always been published each year.
