The Board of Fire Commissioners training syllabus enabled any person who had served as a senior fireman for two years to attempt an examination for the rank of Station Officer (1) The examination consisted of five subjects - mathematics and hydraulics, composition, general knowledge - technical, general knowledge - administration and drill. Success in the examination to the rank of station officer required passing in all subjects. If an officer passed in four of the subjects a post examination could be granted for the remaining subject.

There are two main parts to this series. The first concerns the examinations which were held for eligible candidates in 1952 and 1953. The papers include arrangements for holding the examination, lists of candidates, examination papers and results, post examination papers and results.

The second part of the series consists of papers relating to post examinations for the rank of station officer held in the period between 1950 and 1954. These include lists of eligible candidates, examination papers and results.

This series was previously Concise Guide Series number CGS 522 where it was known by the title Post Examinations;. The title 'Papers relating to examinations for the rank of station officer' has been adopted to better reflect the function of the series.
