These volumes were kept as a record of each patient's history under the provisions of the 1878 Lunacy Act. The first volume (which is labelled as number 3) was begun on 1 March 1879 and a record was made of all patients in the hospital at that time (folios 1-133). The first new admission (14 April 1879) is entered as folio 134. Pasted into the front of the volume (and subsequent volumes) is a printed copy of directions regarding the information to be contained in the Case books dated 27 November 1879, but these were not complied with to 4 December 1880.
