This series contains routine administrative orders or circulars originating from the Chief Officer of the Brigade and were distributed to all stations for advice. The circulars were produced regularly as occasion arose. While they were originally issued as single sheets this series consists of bound copies which were retained for reference in head office. The matters covered by the In Orders include procedures; rules; regulations; appointments; transfers; leave and notices of death.

Prior to 1931 the commencement of this series one set of In Orders was issued to both permanent and volunteer staff. The arrangement for a single series of In Orders resumed in 1979. The first such order was issued on April 26th 1979 under the title New South Wales Fire Brigade In Orders.
