The Darlinghurst Reception House served as a general admission centre where persons exhibiting symptoms of mental illness were examined and held, usually pending transfer to one of the State psychiatric hospitals.The cards are divided into three sequences: females, c.1945-62; males, c.1942-56; and males, c.1957-62. Each card contains the following information: name, sex, social condition, children, age, occupation, nativity, religion, dates of admissions, dates of discharges and to which psychiatric hospital if certified: doctor's name and register number.
