The Darlinghurst Reception House served as a general admission centre where persons exhibiting symptoms of mental illness were examined and held, usually pending transfer to one of the State psychiatric hospitals.

The cards are divided into three sequences: females, c.1945-62; males, c.1942-56; and males, c.1957-62. Each card contains the following information: name, sex, social condition, children, age, occupation, nativity, religion, dates of admissions, dates of discharges and to which psychiatric hospital if certified: doctor's name and register number.
