Full description

This series records name, age, religion, by whom admitted, dates of admission and discharge and how discharged. In addition there are columns headed history (which show nationality, year of arrival, ship, occupation, marital status, birthplace, number of previous admissions and number of children); conduct in institution (usually blank unless conduct had been exceptionally good or bad); and names and addresses of relatives if any.

The series appears to have been created at the beginning of 1889, all inmates at that time being listed alphabetically and further admissions being entered in substantially chronological order. The earliest admission recorded seems to be 1873.
