Denham's exploration of Torres Strait; disturbances on the Victorian goldfields; sending of troops to India; defence precautions following fears of Russian attack; occupation of New Caledonia by French; appointments; slave trade in the Pacific islands; sending of troops to assist in the Maori War; and the withdrawal of the Southern Whale Fishery Company from Auckland Island.
