These photographs were taken by officers of the Government Printing Office during the years c.1870-c.1920.
The photographs cover a wide variety of subjects, for example, public buildings, railways, tramways, street scenes, harbour views, Sydney University, groups of people, ships, public occasions, the Botanic Gardens, military camps, wharves, dams and waterways, statues and slums.

State Archives has copied a number of the glass negatives. Each image that has been produced is numbered in one sequence for reference purposes. A preliminary list of the copies is available. The majority of the glass negatives have no titles. The identification of the subject of the copies is incomplete with many copies having no identification. The identification may not be correct.
