Alphabetically arranged, the volume records: date, name of prisoner, ship and year, original sentence, employer, accuser and witnesses, charge (or crime), sentence (or how disposed of, including acquittals). The title "Black Book" is written on the front cover.

At the front of the volume is a letter sent by the Principal Superintendent of Convicts (No.38/98) to the Police Magistrate Patricks Plains dated 3 February 1838 conveying Ticket of Leave Passports (TLPP) for John Lilley, per Minerva 5 (1824) TLPP No.38/10 and Robert Gosling per Planter (1832) TLPP No.38/13.
