Full description

This is the main series of letters received by the Council of Education. The letters are extremely miscellaneous in content.

They include: applications for the establishment of public schools under provisions of the Public Schools Act (1866), together with, in some cases, lists and/or statistics of prospective school children; Inspectors' reports on various matters; letters from Local School Boards and teachers; letters and memoranda from the Architect, the Examiner and the Drawing Master; letters and reports regarding the Training School; letters from the Bank of New South Wales concerning the state of the Council's account; and letters received from ecclesiastical authorities recommending appointments to Local Boards, forwarding lists of schools for certification, and concerning distribution of the Church and Schools Estates Fund.

The subject of each letter received is normally written on the top of the letter, together with the date of receipt by the Council and Council's in-letter registration number. In the event of a reply being sent by the Council, the out-letter registration number is shown in red ink.

The volumes are indexed by name or location of school in series NRS 2634, Contents lists to letters received, 1867-69 (1/477-78).
