Full description
The Conditional Purchase Indexes that operated from 1896 to 1969 indexed assignments of Crown leases, such as conditional purchase leases on Crown lands, which had been entered in the General Register of Deeds.
Prior to 1896 the transfers were recorded in the General Register of Deeds and the Vendors Index. Records of transfers were also recorded on Crown land tenure cards held by the corresponding Crown lands office. It wasn’t until 1896 that these separate registers were established.
After 1969 Crown lease transfers were once again indexed in the Vendors Index, most likely for pragmatic reasons, and following the conversion of Crown lease tenures to the Torrens Title system in the 1980s, transfers of Crown leases are now recorded on Torrens Titles.
A new set of indexes have been created every few years. The Index registers are handwritten and each set runs alphabetically over a set period of time. The registers have been disbound in preparation for preservation digitisation.
