Full description

The Change of Name Index is a series of six books that index changes of name registered and held by the Registrar General from 1 January 1875 to 31 December 1967.

In NSW, a person may assume a new name without taking any formal steps; however, to assist in the establishment of a change by reputation it is a prudent practice to place a name change on public record to be used for evidential purposes. Formal records recording change of name held by the Registrar General begin with instruments enrolled between 29 January 1875 and 30 September 1925 with the Prothonotary of the Supreme Court. This book was transferred to the Registrar-General on 1 October 1925.

Change of Name instruments were then enrolled in the then Bills of Sale Section of the Registrar-General during the period 1 October 1925 to 30 June 1967, concurrently with instruments registered in the Miscellaneous Register during the period 22 July 1942 to 30 June 1967. Earlier registrations were indexed only in the Index to the Miscellaneous Register.

This series of six index books relates to instruments evidencing change of name recorded in the above record series. The first volume covers 1875-1946 and runs from A to Z. Volumes two to six cover 1947-1967 and run from A to Z across all five volumes.
