Full description

These registers, arranged in alphabetical divisions by surname, list private and intermediate patients attended to at Balmain Hospital.

For each patient, the volumes record: name, unit number, discharge date and surname of honorary doctor. Three columns to the right of each entry may indicate the status of a patient's clinical notes. This is the function of similar columns in the public registers (see NRS 21521). Most records are complete but occasionally the columns are annotated, usually with the phrase “See Public”. This indicates that the patient was not private or intermediate and that the entry has been transferred to the corresponding public register.

Two of the registers are labelled to indicate that they relate to tonsils and adenoids operations and circumcisions in the John Beasley Ward. In addition to these procedures, the third volume lists maternity patients, with the names and birth dates of babies included with the mothers' entries.
