The Modus Operandi Section of the Police Department was established in the 1930's. It was a section of the Criminal Investigation Branch until 1972 when it became part of the Technical Support Branch. The section's work is based upon the creation and maintenance of records relating to the methods used by persons in the performance of crimes and distinguishing characteristics of criminals in order to assist in the identification of criminals.

The murder files contain Modus Operandi forms from 1961 when the murder files were separated from the Murder/Manslaughter files. They contain the record of interview.
