Full description
The series contains registers of day surgery operations carried out at the Bathurst Base Hospital.
The hospital was established in the 1820s as the Bathurst Convict Hospital. (1) In 1842 the hospital was rebuilt and became the Bathurst District Hospital. (2)
Successive legislation, which originated in Model by-law 113 for this series of volumes, mandated Public Hospitals and a number of other health institutions to record specific information in a register whenever a surgical operation was performed. (3)
The information in the volumes varies slightly over time, but typically includes the following: the hospital name with columns headed by the date of the operation, designated theatre, serial number, patient name, age, medical record number, ward, anaesthetic, anaesthetist, theatre sister in attendance, nature of the surgical procedure, total time, surgeon’s name, assistants present and remarks.
The volumes are arranged in chronological order with a commencement and completion date on the cover, or the year of the register.
