Full description

This series consists of glass plate and acetate negative images relating to the infrastructure and operations of electricity suppliers in the Newcastle area. They provide an insight into the introduction of electricity into the Newcastle community, with images of works buildings, powerhouses and grounds, public lighting, vehicles and council-owned buildings.

The series contains original images of substations and administrative buildings which are heritage listed, such as NESCA House. Other images include transformers, testing equipment, meter boards, aerial photographs, diagrams and oscillograms.

The series is made up of glass plate and acetate negatives which were used as alternating formats to record the operations and assets of the electricity suppliers.

The numbering for both the glass plate and acetate negatives works as follows: negative number – box number – photograph number. For example, 12 – 2 – 24, is negative number 12, box number 2, photograph number 24.

The glass plate negative numbers start from 1 – 1 – 1. Where there are gaps in the numbering, refer to the acetate negative list. For example, where the glass plate numbers stop at 12 – 56 – 636, the acetate numbers commence from 1 – 57 – 637 to 20 – 57 – 656. The glass plate numbers recommence from 1 – 58 –  657 and so on.

This series is controlled by two indexes. NRS 20876 is a sequentially-numbered index and NRS 20877 is a subject index which groups the images into sections with subjects for works buildings, zone substations, NESCA house and City Hall, diagrams, aerial photographs and a range of other topics. The indexes provide a description of the image next to its number.
