This series comprises a summary of valuation and rate books from the Illabo Shire Council, which records the valuation of properties as assessed, and the subsequent payment of rates by property owners.

Each year the local council was required to set the level of, and collect rates in respect of, all rateable properties within the municipal or shire district. These Rates and Valuation Notices were initially created under s.137-156 of the Municipalities Act 1897 (Act No.23, 1897), and subsequent legislation. These sections specified the rating responsibilities of the council, and the need to maintain records of the rating and valuation process.

This series consists of the following information: the name, address and occupation of the owner and the occupier; the situation, area or dimensions of the land; the unimproved capital value; the amount payable; and the rates paid, including any arrears.
