Full description

The series consists of Crown Lands Index Cards for the Balranald Lands Office.

These cards provided an index to the Crown Lands Tenure Cards for the Balranald Lands Office. Those cards included a large number of types of tenures, including: Road Permits; Crown Lease; Settlement Lease; After Auction Purchase; Conditional Lease; Special Lease; Conditional Purchase Lease; Annual Lease; Settlement Purchase Lease; Permissive Occupancy; Conditional Purchase; Homestead Selection; Suburban Holding; Closer Settlement Lease; and Homestead Farm.

In 1861 Crown lands management was reformed with the Crown Lands Occupation Act, 1861 (25 Vic. No.2) which allowed for the leasing of Crown lands. The Act regulated the occupation and management and subsequent alienation of Crown lands.

Details of Crown tenures were originally recorded in registers arranged by tenure type. From 1936 the district offices ceased to use the registers and created a district area set of cards. The district offices would then inform the Head Office which would create a comprehensive duplicate set of tenure cards for all districts (NRS 18096). (1)

The information found on the index cards varies but they generally indicate the name of the landholder and the tenure number of the land, eg. CP26/765. Other information that may be found on the index card is the landholder's address, a reference number to a relevant Land Board file (LB papers), other tenures held by that landholder, and other selectors of that land.
