In the first register (1948-1950), each double page is nominally monthly, although after the first few months, entries were made chronologically by entry date, with more than one month per page. Each line records the details of an individual boy, so their admission and discharge details are on the same line. Later registers (June 1950 onwards) dispensed with this practice, recording 'Movements Inward' (admissions) on a weekly basis on the left page, and 'Movements Outward' (discharges) for the same week on the right page, meaning that the same names might not appear on both lists.Details recorded vary over time, but inward admissions always include date of admission, name, age or date of birth, religion, from whom received (e.g. another institution), address, and any remarks. Later registers added columns for new committals (offences), name of court, transfers from other institutions (named), absconders returned, leave returned, shelter returned, hospital returned, and remand cases. The outward discharge details record date of discharge, to whom discharged, address, how placed, and remarks, with later registers also including columns for transfers to other institutions, to shelter, absconded, on leave, to hospital, to court (remand), to whom discharged, address, from PC (Personal Care), and period of retention. From the second register (June 1950 onward) there is also a section on each double page to record weekly statistics relating to the number of boys housed at the facility. Details recorded in this section include the number of inmates in residence, further broken down into new committals, transfers from other institutions, discharges, remand cases, plus number of inmates leaving and/or returning as absconders, on leave, going to or from shelter or hospital, and those attending court. The 1971-1977 register is in a different format to the others with the 'In' page listing date of admission, name, age, religion, from whom received, address, and whether the inmate was committed or transferred. The 'Out' page records date of discharge, name, where discharged or transferred to, how the inmate was placed, and period detained. Each double page covers a month, but is broken down further into weeks within each page. Column names were manually changed to better reflect the details recorded, but this was not always done consistently, meaning the contents of the columns does not necessarily reflect the heading. Various statistics for each week were added over time, starting with a simple number of those enrolled, and later adding numbers admitted, discharged or transferred, and inmates on strength. Other statistics were included as required, for example inmates returned to shelter, admitted to or returned from hospital, or AWOL (absent without leave).&rft.creator=AGY-1921 | Home for Boys, Tamworth (1948-1976) Endeavour House (1976-1990) &rft_subject=HISTORICAL STUDIES&rft_subject=HISTORY AND ARCHAEOLOGY&rft.type=dataset&rft.language=English Access the data

Full description

The series consists of registers recording admission and discharge details of youths sent to Endeavour House in Tamworth.

The registers consist of double page entries arranged by either week or month, with one page recording admissions to the facility and the facing page recording discharges. In the first register (1948-1950), each double page is nominally monthly, although after the first few months, entries were made chronologically by entry date, with more than one month per page. Each line records the details of an individual boy, so their admission and discharge details are on the same line. Later registers (June 1950 onwards) dispensed with this practice, recording 'Movements Inward' (admissions) on a weekly basis on the left page, and 'Movements Outward' (discharges) for the same week on the right page, meaning that the same names might not appear on both lists.

Details recorded vary over time, but inward admissions always include date of admission, name, age or date of birth, religion, from whom received (e.g. another institution), address, and any remarks.

Other statistics were included as required, for example inmates returned to shelter, admitted to or returned from hospital, or AWOL (absent without leave).
