This register contains a summary record of all homestead selection protection orders in the Land District of Hay, kept by the Hay Land Board Office.

The homestead selection tenure was introduced in 1895 by the Crown Lands Act of 1895 (58 Vic. No.18). Upon compliance with conditions, a perpetual lease grant could be issued to the lessee. The lease was subject to the payment of a perpetual rent, payable half-yearly.

The register records information such as: the number of the homestead selection, number of the grant, name and address of homestead selector, area of land, date of confirmation, county, parish, and numbers of portions, particulars of the protection order, including, date of order, date and time of receipt, by whom lodged, and address, and when application sent to Head Office.
