When the decision was made to close the State Rail Archives the parts of the collection that were required as State archives were transferred to the State Records Authority of NSW. Those record series were incorporated into the State Records series system of archives control and were re-numbered.This series was formerly part of the State Rail Archives collection where it was identified as series R387. This series consists of three volumes, labelled 'Passenger and Goods Rolling Stock 1918', 'Register of Rolling Stock' and 'Wagon Register'.

The Passenger and Goods Rolling Stock Register contains a record of coaching and goods rolling stock between 1903 and 1930. Under each carriage/wagon class is a list of vehicle numbers, with any alterations to the vehicle noted, eg. conversion/condemned etc. There is an alphabetical index in the front of the volume.
