Full description
This series consists of personal history cards (form X1409) recording appointment and service history details of railway employees born post-1900 (to c.1962). Primary entries record name, date of birth, date of appointment, staff certificate number, and date commenced to contribute to the Railway Service Superannuation Fund. Further entries record dates of position (employment classification), location, branch, rate of pay, and remarks.
Supplementary cards, where attached, include form X1409B, for construction employees; form X1409E, which includes a record of military service; and form X3197, recording details of time worked for leave purposes.
These cards were kept by the Finance Branch for superannuation purposes, and include those of employees from a range of metropolitan and country locations. The series content may be an amalgamation of former State Rail Archives series and is in two separate alphabetical sequences.
From 1955 until 2000 the State Rail Authority of New South Wales maintained an ‘in house archives’ consisting of the archival records of the Authority, its predecessor agencies and the private railway companies taken over by the government. The date ranges of the records were from 1849 until 2000. When the decision was made to close the ‘State Rail Archives’ the parts of the collection that were required as State archives were transferred to the State Records Authority of NSW. Those record series were incorporated into the State Records series system of archives control and were re-numbered.
While this series does not appear to have been part of the State Rail Archives collection it was identified as series R228. It may have been viewed as series R228 and could have been previously cited as such in notes by researchers or in publications or unpublished works.
Cards for earlier employees are held in NRS-12922 Railway Personal History Cards - Employees born before 1900.
