Full description

This register contains a summary record of applications for permission to ringbark in the Land District of Corowa, kept by the Corowa Lands Office.

This tenure was introduced through the Ringbarking on Crown Lands Regulation Act of 1881 (45 Vic. No.9), which stated that the practice of ringbarking on Crown Lands should be regulated by law. Ringbarking means cutting or stripping the bark from a tree for the purpose or in such a manner that would naturally have the effect of killing the tree or stopping its growth.

After the passing of this Act, no lessee of Crown Lands could ringbark any tree on Crown Lands unless he was the holder of a 'Permission to Ringbark'. Any lessee who ringbarked trees, or allowed another to ringbark trees on Crown Lands without permission was required to pay a fine of between 1 and 10 shillings per tree. Should a lessee be convicted twice of ringbarking trees on Crown Lands unlawfully, he would forfeit his leasehold. All 'Permissions to Ringbark' granted were to be published in the Government Gazette within fourteen days of granting.

The register records information such as the number of the application, name and address of applicant, date of application, description of Leasehold, description of land to be ringbarked, boundaries etc., date of forwarding of application to Board, how dealt with by the Board, whether granted or refused and the date of the decision, any conditions imposed upon the applicant, and any further remarks.
