Full description

The series of indices of Head Office Crown Lands Tenure cards were created as a finding aid/indexes to the Head Office Crown Lands Tenure Cards and Crown Land Tenure Registers.

The cards were previously placed at the front of the drawers containing the tenure cards which they relate to. The index cards were then arranged by card size which indicated the status of the tenure. Large cards reflected current tenures; medium, current/spent and small, spent.

The index cards are now arranged by the status of the tenure, whether the card is current, current spent or spent and then by tenure type.

For 'current cards' the indices are for 'After Auction Purchases' (1972-1977) and 'Auction Purchases' (1972-1975). These indices are alphabetical by surname of purchaser and provide area and tenure card number. There is also a summary card of locations (1972), this card provides a list of tenure locations and the annual numerical number range associated with the area.

For 'spent/current cards' the indices are for a number of different types of tenure. These are arranged alphabetically by surname of purchaser and provide area and tenure card number. These include: 'Auction Purchase'; 'After Auction Purchase' and 'After Tender Purchase' (1951- 1971). Also included are alphabetical by surname indices for an assortment of Settlement Leases including: 'Settlers on Active Service'; 'Lessees whose titles had prior to 31 December 1906 ceased to exist'; 'Extended to Leases in Perpetuity'; 'Settlement Lease in Safe (Under Mortgage to Minister for Lands)'; 'Penal Interest Remitted'; 'Settlement Lease Confirmed'; 'Settlement Lease Withdrawn and Disallowed' and 'Settlement Lease Converted'.

For the spent cards the indices are for a number of different types of tenure. Most provide minimal information but there are two comprehensive set of indices. These are 'Tenures for transfer to Control of Forestry' which are arranged by area and provide a tenure number and 'Crown Land Sales' which are arranged alphabetically by name of purchaser and chronologically.

Some cards provide summary information such as the number of tenures per annum.

The physical format of the cards is paper based cards in small to medium and large sizes.
