These volumes contain the following information: registration number, date letter received, former papers, sender of letter, subject, date of letter, disposal, and subsequent papers.

From February 1864 to June 1892 each letter was given a number in a single number system as it was received, the arrangement within each register being chronological. From July 1892 the registers follow a classified arrangement by gaol or office. As each letter was received it was given a number but its position in the register was determined by the gaol or office referred to. Within each class the order is still chronological by date of receipt. Most of the registers in the classified series have a contents list in the front of the volume.
