Full description
The series contains post mortem reports created as a result of a coronial investigation.
The reports were recorded by the Division of Forensic Medicine which was established in November 1961 as a specialist Division within the Department of Public Health. The Division had previously been the Government Medical Officers Branch, a general purpose branch.
The reports include test results, certificates, brain reports, general X-rays and dental X-rays and encompass murder cases and aircraft fatalities.
At one time post mortems for murdered people and air accidents were each kept in a separate series.
The records comprise of A4 papers, test results papers and X-rays contained in envelopes and folders. A large proportion of folders are arranged in order of year with a sequential number and labelled with the name of the individual. Some folders are ordered alphabetically (1963-1964), while murder cases have been bundled together for 1987-1990. X-rays are stored in separate containers and span from 1964-2006.
Miscellaneous X-rays, where the identity of the person is unknown and forensic samples are not included in this series. (1)
Some records contain hard-copy photographs, although in more recent years photographs have been printed out on A4 paper or stored on CD-ROMs.
