An Act to Establish Municipalities 1867 (31 Vic. Act No.12) provided for the levying of special rates 'for the purpose of constructing and maintaining water works and ensuring the supply of pure water.' The rates could be imposed upon the owners and occupants of the houses in the streets where the water mains were laid down. The rates could not exceed 5/- per annum, for each room in a rateable dwelling. (1)
Signed by the Town Clerk, information recorded on the receipt books include assessment number of the ratepayer, amount due and amount paid. The receipt books are bound volumes arrange in chronological order.
Custody History
These records were originally transferred together with records of the Dumaresq Shire Council. The two Councils were amalgamated in 1923 and as a consequence of the amalgamation, the records of Hillgrove Municipality came into the possession of the Clerk of the Dumaresq Shire Council. The Council continued to maintain the records until 13 January 1961 when they were transferred to the University Archives together with Council records.
