Full description
This series consists of community relations files created by the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) between 1991 and 2004. In 2003 these agencies both came under the control of the newly created Department of Environment and Conservation.
The files within this series document the agency's function of establishing a rapport with the community and raising and maintaining the Department's broad public profile. The majority of the files contain media releases aimed at informing the public of special events and activities, ministerial announcements, new research by the department and public health and safety issues.
The types of topics covered by the National Parks media releases include fire fighting, hazard reduction and feral animal management in National Parks. Topics covered by the EPA media releases include environmental conditions at New South Wales beaches, pollution levels in rivers and pollution reduction programmes. Both the NPWS and EPA records include media releases publicising educational or community programmes and events and document any announcements made by the Minister regarding legislative changes or major issues pertaining to the NPWS or EPA.
Also included in the series are a number of files from the Public Affairs Division of the NPWS containing records pertaining to the promotion and communication of specific issues, events and programmes and publicising management plans. Included in these files are speeches made by the Director-General of NPWS and the Minister for the Environment.
The files are arranged in file number order. The NPWS files feature a year prefix followed by a number while the EPA files feature the alpha prefix 'HO' followed by a number.
